Opposites Attract:

How to resolve conflict in your life using Mandorlas & Shadow work.

Is there something you long for in your life and don’t know how to achieve?
Is there tension between you and a significant person in your life?
Is there an action you need to take in your life and then don’t?

The usual saying we hear is "like attracts like". However, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Imagine you are holding two magnets, one in each hand, trying to push them together. If the positive side of one is facing the positive side of the other, you will not be able to get them to come together. In order for two magnets to become magnetized and stick to each other, the negative side of one must be facing the positive side of the other.

The same is true with us.

We all have 'opposing' forces within us. People often become enmeshed in an “either/or” mentality and deny that they have "both/and" within them. For instance, there can be a part of us that wants to do something but another part that thinks we cannot. That's where the internal conflict happens. We tend to think that we can have 'either/or'. We can either have the cookie or we can stick to our diets.

How do we resolve conflict? How do we learn a "both/and" mentality?

The Mandorla, which in Italian is the word for almond, is an ancient symbol of two circles coming together, overlapping one another to form an almond shape in the middle. Mandorla means wholeness or unity, symbolizing the interactions and interdependence of opposing worlds and forces.

The Mandorla gives us the opportunity to have a dialogue between the light and the dark, the ego and the shadow, the yin and the yang, the want and the do not want. It gives us a way to see, hear, and feel beyond the "either/or" duality. When combined with Shadow work, the process of transforming denied qualities into creative imagination and life-force, we can begin to come into harmony with ourselves and each other.

Mining for Gold in Our Shadow:

A glimpse at the power, beauty and meaning of our shadow side.

…and yet your troubles may turn to treasures rich - How sad that you yourself veil the treasure that is yours! ~ Rumi

What if you knew how to turn a problem into a blessing?
How would that change your life?

Do you have Button-pushers in your life?
Would you like to learn a way to ‘un-hook’ those buttons?

All nature lives in opposites: light and dark, male and female, creation and destruction, up and down. There is great value in this polarity because everything is made valid by its opposite.

The shadow totem represents some denied aspect of us. It is a part of ourselves that we do not like and have “stuffed away” because it did not win us approval. Our shadow operates mostly in unconscious reflex and contains our fear, anger, repressed desires and needs, dreams we threw away, past pain that has not been healed, as well as childhood conditioning. Our denied parts are gifts that we said were not good enough.

Imagine a little girl who watches her brother get punished for “acting out”. She becomes introverted and doesn’t speak up because of it. She learned that it wasn’t “O.K.” to share her heart. Her ability to speak up got “stuffed away” in the shadows.

Our shadow totem is calling us to be present to what we have denied within us and to bring those qualities back to the light. In so doing, we reclaim the gifts our shadow holds for us.

Shadow work, then, is the process of transforming those denied qualities into creative imagination and life-force.
